In January of 2007, the new Cane Bay High School was about 50% completed. The school is located about about four miles northwest of Carnes Crossroads at the intersection of Highways 17A and 176. The school is scheduled to open in August of 2008. It will have a capacity of 1500 students.

The new school was built to relieve overcrowding at the nearby Stratford High School and to handle the anticipated increase in high school students in Berkeley County. It will be located near the entrance to Cane Bay Plantation, a planned 10,000 home community. A new middle and elementary school are also planned for the development.

The football stadium will seat 6000 spectators and the new school will have separate areas for vocational classes, an auditorium, media center, gym, media center and administrative offices.

Berkeley County School District officials presented the proposed attendance zone for the new Cane Bay High School in early 2007. According to the officials, Cane Bay High School would open with 704 freshman and sophomores. By the year 2010, the school should have 1430 students in grades 9-12. Most of the students would come from Sangaree Middle School with a smaller number coming from College Park Middle School and Berkeley Middle School. This proposal may be voted on in February of 2007.

On February this proposal was voted upon and was slightly altered. The Calamus Pond and Whitehouse road areas now are zoned to Cane Bay, as are both sides of Black Tom Road. The area from Limehouse Lane to the fairgrounds will go to Stratford instead of Cane Bay. Attendance line exceptions could be made for families with two children of different ages assigned to attend two high schools.

A new article that appeared in the September 14, 2007 edition of The Post and Courier Newspaper indicated that the new Cane Bay High School Principal is Cassandra Jennings. Although the school is not scheduled to open until August 2008, Ms. Jennings has a temporary office in a trailer on the campus. By the time Cane Bay High School opens next Fall as Berkeley County's seventh high school, Ms. Jennings will have served as principal for more than a year at a salary of $98,336. According to the newspaper article, Ms. Jennings spends her time writing a student handbook. She tours portions of the school about once a week and works with architects to select furniture for classrooms. She has studied the test scores of the future students as well as their anticipated graduation plans in order to access what courses Cane Bay should offer. She attends principals' meetings and keeps up with instructional strategies. In addition, she works on marketing the school and in developing Cane Bay's identity. She is involved in approving the school's logo and academic seal and in developing the football uniforms and helmets. After winter break, Ms. Jennings will focus on hiring new teachers and registering incoming students for classes. It is anticipated that approximately 800 ninth and tenth grade students will show up at class on the first day.

An Elementary and Middle School will be built in Cane Bay with the Elementary School's construction to start in the summer of 2007 and the school to open in August of 2008.

Cane Bay High School Athletics

Jeff Cruce was officially named the football coach and athletic director of the new Cane Bay High School on Tuesday. Cruse was the football coach at Hanahan High Scool for 13 years.  Cruse won 112 games at Hanahan during his tenure at the school.

In an interview with the News and Courier he stated "For me, I'm sad and happy at the same time," Cruce said. "I'm sad because I spent 13 wonderful years at Hanahan. I've had a lot of fun, support from the community and the kids have been great. But I'm excited to start a new opportunity. It was a tough decision, but my wife and I prayed about it. We felt it was the right choice. I'm 45, at my age, it's not too late to start a new school. It's going to take a lot of energy, and we're just not going to focus on football. We want to have strong teams in every sport, boys and girls."

Cruce won 10 region championships and played in the Class AA Lower State championship in 2004. He produced 47 players who have played college ball, and another four who will sign next month.

Cruce will face a challenge at the new Cane Bay High School. Although the Cobras will compete at the Class AA level the first two seasons, his team will only have ninth and 10th graders from which to choose. He expects to field a B-team, junior varsity and varsity team in the fall season of 2008. Cruce commenetd that "It's going to be a challenge to compete. But I have high expectations. The community has high expectations."

Cruce said he might bring a couple of assistants from Hanahan to Cane Bay. He expects some of his assistants at Hanahan to apply for his old job. He has had a large number of inquiriers about assistants' jobs at Cane Bay, many of whom are well qualified.

Cruce's team will compete in the same region with Bishop England for two years before moving to the Class AAAA level.

A photo of the site of the new Cane Bay Elementary School scheduled to open in August of 2009 with 700 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. It is a 98,000 square foot facility which will cost $19.8 million to build. A middle school is being designed on site but no money has been allocated for construction. Cane Bay developer Ben Gramling III donated about 150 acres for the three schools. Cane Bay Plantation is slated for 5,000 homes. The schools are almost across the road from the Parks of Berkeley, another residential development planned for 5,700 homes.
