A large percentage of Charleston area residents own a dog. The mild year round weather in the Charleston area provides the dog owner the opportunity to get outdoors and exercise their dog for a relatively extended time period. Lease laws in effect in most of the Charleston tri-county area prohibit a dog owner from allowing his pet to run free off their residence. However, a number of Charleston municipalities have built "dog parks" to accomodate the owners who like their dogs to "run free" yet confined to a fenced and safe area. The town of Mt. Pleasant, SC has built two dog parks for it's residents. One is located in the Park West Community and the other adjacent to the Mt. Pleasant Waterworks and the Joe Gawrych Baseball Complex.
