A Recent News Release By Wal-Mart
Mt. Pleasant Shoppers Anticipate Supercenter’s Opening
Store showcases Wal-Mart’s newest features, energy-saving efforts
MT. PLEASANT, S.C., Sept. 7, 2007 – The shelves are mostly stocked and nearly 350 associates are preparing to welcome the crowds at the opening of the new Wal-Mart Supercenter set to debut in Mt. Pleasant Sept. 19. Following a 7 a.m. grand opening ceremony, the store will open at 7:30 a.m. to a community eagerly awaiting the retailer’s everyday low prices and shopping conveniences. As part of its grand opening activities, the store will announce $31,000 in grants to local organizations. It is located at 3000 Proprietors Place in the Market at Oakland shopping district.
“We are excited for our customers to see our new store and all of the latest Wal-Mart features we will offer, including our souvenir shop, fabulous new toy department and our garden center with its own drive-through loading area,” said Store Manager Renita Goss.
One-Stop Shopping Convenience Closer to Home The 194,473-square-foot Supercenter was designed to offer customers one-stop shopping convenience and low prices, with more than 30 merchandise departments and a variety of time-saving services. The store features a full line of groceries including bakery goods, frozen foods, meat and dairy products, fresh produce and a variety of organic offerings. A bakery and deli will offer freshly made items, and the store will sell beer and wine.
“Our customers will be able to find their favorite brands right in their own neighborhood and at the Wal-Mart value price,” said Goss. “With today’s gas prices, being able to shop close to home offers additional savings to our customers.”
Among its many new features, the Mt. Pleasant store will feature a newly designed Toyland with signage to highlight brands that parents and kids know and love and interactive displays, which allows kids to experience new items and have fun while shopping. The toys are color-coded for shoppers’ convenience - blue for boys’ toys, pink for girls’, green for toys for both genders, and yellow for toys appropriate for toddlers and infants.
For those seeking souvenirs and gifts with local flavor, the store has a T-shirt and souvenir shop located near the general merchandise entrance. The store’s lawn and garden center features a large selection of live plants and outdoor furniture with a drive-through area for easy loading. A lighted merchandise display window will highlight key seasonal merchandise and enhance the front façade.
The store also has home entertainment and electronics departments that showcase well-known consumer electronics such as MP3 players, DVD players for home or auto and high-definition televisions. Celebrating weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and other milestones is now easier with the store’s selection of invitations, crafts, decorations and other party items. Other merchandise areas include apparel and accessories, sporting goods, electronics, home fashions, fine jewelry and health and beauty.
Additional store features include a Tire & Lube Express, a pharmacy, a one-hour photo lab and a Wal-Mart Connect Center for wireless phone sales. Leased areas and services include a SmartStyle Family Hair Salon, a Regal Nails salon, a McDonald’s restaurant and a branch of First Federal Bank. The 24-hour store will be open seven days a week.
Store Showcases Wal-Mart’s Energy-Saving Efforts Wal-Mart took extra care to minimize the store’s energy usage and environmental impact. The store has a daylight harvesting system, which uses skylights to refract daylight throughout the store and light sensors to monitor the amount of natural light available. The Mt. Pleasant Supercenter also features energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) refrigerated case lighting, and motion sensor-driven LED lights have been installed in the store’s frozen foods cases. The store’s stained concrete floors are specially designed to require little maintenance. The store uses compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs at the registers and in the lighting fixture and ceiling fan display in the hardware department. Outside, the store features extensive landscaping with a multitude of palm trees, magnolias, oaks and other plants native to the area.
“We’re committed to saving energy while providing a pleasant shopping experience for our customers,” said Goss. “Our associates will also do their part every day. They’ll collect cardboard and plastic waste for recycling, and we’ve provided them with washable coffee cups in the break room rather than single-use cups. Our store will also be a drop-off site where customers can bring their excess plastic bags.”
Local Agencies Receive $31,000 in Initial Grants In keeping with Wal-Mart’s philosophy to help its local community, the store will announce a total of $31,000 in donations to area organizations as part of its grand opening celebration, including a $15,000 grant to the town of Mt. Pleasant to outfit a room in the new senior services recreation center. EDITOR’S NOTE: Grant recipients are listed on the fact sheet on page three.
The store will also have a budget to grant donations locally throughout the year. Organizations can contact the store to inquire about donations, matching grants and hosting on-site fundraisers.
Approximately 350 Associates Hired Upon its opening, the Supercenter plans to employ approximately 350 associates, Goss said. “Great career opportunities, competitive benefits and lasting friendships are just a few of the positive aspects of becoming a Wal-Mart associate,” said Goss. She started her own Wal-Mart career as an hourly associate in 1992, working as a part-time cashier at a store in Meadville, Penn.
Community Invited to Grand Opening Celebration Sept. 19 The community is invited to attend a grand opening celebration at 7 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19. The Color Guard from Wando High School’s Junior ROTC will present the colors, and students from the Cainhoy Steel Tigers Band will perform. Mayor Harry Hallman Jr. will help Goss cut the ribbon to the new store, and several community and business leaders are scheduled to attend. Throughout the day, customers will be able to enjoy numerous product samples, giveaways and character appearances.
An invitation-only open house for VIPs, Wal-Mart associates and their families is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Preview tours will be provided and checks will be presented to community organizations. Reporters and photographers are welcome.
