The Charleston area has a large number of unique communities. One of the most unique and historic is the Old Village in the town of Mount Pleasant, S.C. The Town of Mount Pleasant was founded in 1680 by English settlers. From the early 1700's, the only means of transportation between Mt. Pleasant and Charleston was by ferries and barges. The first of the small settlements in Mt. Pleasant to become a village was Greenwich which was formed prior to the Revolutionary War with lots laid out along the waterfront. Greenwich merged with Mount Pleasant in 1837. By the mid 1800's, Mount Pleasant became a summer resort for many South Carolina families. In the late 1800's a writer for the News and Courier declared:"Mount Pleasant cannot be excelled as a resort for the summer or winter tourist as an annual residence."Boasting"all the attractions of the North."the town's list of attractions including boating, swimming, fishing, hunting, and shady, pleasant drives. Mount Pleasant and the Old Village continues to attract full time residents as well as visitors from throughout the country.
